ROBERT CARR - ARTIST BIOGRAPHY and STATEMENT

Herbiesmirch is a trickster, but don’t allow him to fool you — Herbiesmirch is not my name. He’s one of my imaginary friends. My name is Robert Carr. Some call me Herb. I’m a multimedia artist based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and I’ve been creating art for as long as I can remember. At the moment I am drawing with ink.

The films played by my imagination inside my head are particularly vivid just before I fall asleep, in my dreams, or when I listen to music. I can not imagine a world without music. Books, stories and history offer additional avenues into the vivid worlds of my imagination, the primary well of my artistic inspiration.

When I was a kid, an artist visited me in a dream and gifted me with a magic pen. The artist said to me: “Any image drawn with this pen will complete itself with color.” Like that pen art has a mystical, magical quality. It’s a beautiful concept to consider, that through the creative process an invisible idea is translated into a physical form and offers a glimpse into a world unseen.

I’ve studied at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Kansas City Art Institute, and the College of Santa Fe. I earned my Master’s degree in Art Education from The University of New Mexico.
