About

gunnar, Japan1956 2

Growing up hyperactive, I have lived my entire life with an acute awareness of time’s passing. As long as I can remember there has never been enough time. By chance, at the age of 13, looking through a camera lens allowed me to see as I felt.

As I matured, I realized I was drawn to the portions of my images containing accidental motion. What if I pursued motion intentionally? Would moving the camera during exposure, compressing time, allow me to more effectively reach my own feelings about seeing? And might those feelings resonate with others?

The camera has given voice to my inner world. Through it I am able to express emotions and share experiences.  But for most of my life, the bulk of my work has been reserved as a private journal, showing only a select few images to others each year in galleries around the country.

While preparing for the launch of this new adventure – assembling, editing and organizing thousands of images – I realized that this blog is the book of my life; it is the keeper of my story.  And as I continue to shoot, it continues to evolve – offering new plot twists, themes and threads.

Twice a month, I will introduce a new series of images devoted to one subject, one location or one theme in the Visions in Motion section. Each series presents a vignette: a narrow context of 4-8 images shot in one place on one day as one complete theme. And in Behind the Lens, I’ll share my photographic process, travel stories, discoveries and musings along the way.

By opening a window into my world, I hope that these images are the flint that ignites a conversation with others. Together, I want to explore these broader questions: Can we stretch time? What lives in the space between moments? And how do we find peace within our ADD-o-genic world?
