A fine artist of contemporary realism and abstraction, Susan Begy currently lives and works in Santa Fe, NM.
Her work explores the ironies and contradictions extant in our culture today. Through an array of symbols and references she explores these concepts with historical images that connect the present with the past.
Some recurring symbolic images in her works include monumental evergreen trees, ladders, birds on wires, Greek columns and arches. Allusions have been made to other artists and cultures (Raphael, Hieronymous Bosch, ancient Celts); to literature, philosophy and music (Calvino Italo, Nietzsche, Giles Swayne, Mozart); significant events and trends (wars, environmentalism, consumerism, desire).
Characteristic of Begy's paintings are strong, rich colors as well as powerful lines emphasizing movement, action and ascension. She frequently employs a vertical format which adds to the dramatic, majestic treatment of her subject matter.
With latent imagery immersed and juxtaposed with recognizable subject matter, Begy creates works that are intended as a puzzle for the viewer to unlock.
