WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON
Dear friends,
Unfortunately, we did not prevail in our bid for Public Regulation
Commissioner, district 3. Nonetheless, the campaign was victorious in a number
of ways. Our petition drive in June brought together many people from across
party lines, and succeeded in gathering over 3300 signatures in a ten day period
and 500 qualifying contributions for public financing.
This effort grew
into a campaign that worked throughout northern New Mexico during the summer and
fall. We distributed over 100,000 cards and flyers to voters around the
district, informing people about the importance of a strong regulatory agency
that works to keep corporate power in check and the imperative in investing in
clean renewable energy.
In the end, the campaign garnered 75,000 votes,
about 45% of the total. In Santa Fe and Los Alamos counties, we won with over
60% of the vote.
Rick may not be taking a seat on the PRC, but this
campaign was yet another step towards a more democratic New Mexico. Many, many
more people are now familiar with the PRC and the role our government is
supposed to play in protecting everyday people from the abuses of corporate
power that are so rampant in our society.
Whether the issue is making
sure that utility corporations are holding up their end of agreements or who
should control essential services in our communities, we need to remain vigilant
as citizens. Without citizen involvement during and between elections, our
government will continue to be a rubber stamp for corporate greed.
Thanks so much for your help and support during this incredibly exciting
election season. We look forward to working with you again soon.
Sincerely,
Rick and the campaign team
