The Role of Mindfulness Meditation in Developing a Science of Consciousness
Shinzen Young, PhD

This program explores how meditation masters and consciousness scientists can cross-fertilize each others' disciplines, since each possesses tools the other lacks. In the Buddhist mindfulness tradition (Vipassana meditation), high states of concentration are developed through systematic exercises. This concentration functions like a microscope for exploring the nature of consciousness from the inside. With this high-resolution tool, the mindfulness practitioner can deconstruct complex sense experiences such as thinking and emotion into a small set of natural components and sub components. It then becomes possible to see clearly how qualitative properties (such as the sense of self) emerge through the interactions of these components. Mindfulness meditation masters could provide consciousness scientists with valuable suggestions about what to look for when creating models of consciousness. Furthermore, because of their extraordinary sensitivity, mindfulness meditators could be valuable subjects in experiments attempting to correlate subjective experience with objective neurophysiological events. On the other hand, consciousness science could provide meditation teachers with new paradigms for explaining their spiritual experience. This could lead to more effective ways to cultivate and teach meditative states. Futhermore, familiarity with science would provide meditation teachers with a universally accepted language with which to describe their experiences. The Dalai Lama has called for vigorous cooperation between meditation masters and scientists. This seminar explores the specifics of what such cooperation might entail.

Presenter Bio: Sinzen became fascinated with Asian culture at an early age, learning Chinese and Japanese while still in his teens. He was ordained as a Buddhist monk in 1971 at Mt. Koya, Japan. After several years of training in Asian monasteries, he became interested in the scientific study of meditative states and worked at the Princeton Biofeedback Institute. He has taught Asian philosophy, mathematics and physics. Shinzen has been conducting meditation retreats for over 20 years. His goal is to make meditative practice a viable path for Westerners, not just an exotic import from the East.

Inspirational Leadership: Destiny, Calling and Cause
Lance Secretan, PhD

Inspirational Leadership offers a radical theory of leadership based on the leadership practices of some of the greatest leaders of all time, as well as many inspiring leaders of organizations today. Lance inspires by sharing his stunning insights on how to reawaken spirit and values in the workplace. The future belongs to visionary leaders who create organizations that inspire the soul by honoring and celebrating people and providing the same level of honor and service to employees as has traditionally only been offered to external customers. By citing examples of great leaders, Secretan points out that the long history of modern leadership has derived its practices, models and heroes from the metaphors of war based on power and control. These examples have produced the theories and practices favored by many contemporary corporate leaders today. Almost unnoticed by these "old story" leaders, however, is the emerging "new story" of leadership--a critical mass of new leadership thinking which is beginning to eclipse the "old story." Lance shows you how leaders: -- Inspire instead of motivate -- Encourage truth-telling and promise-keeping -- Nourish creativity -- Abandon the concept of competition -- Maintain a state of grace -- Create physical space that cares for the soul -- Treat people as sacred -- Replace re-engineering with regenerating -- Generate noble profits -- Build communities instead of teams You will learn: The seven steps to becoming an Inspirational Leader. 1. Defining the Leader's uniqueness that calls to be lived--"The Destiny" 2. Creating a magnetic vision--"The Cause" 3. Enabling followers to find their Calling 4. Aligning Calling and Cause 5. Serving followers 6. Guiding the contribution of brilliance 7. Magic Ingredient "X"--Creating the environment that encourages followers to inspire their leader.

Presenter Bio: Lance has built a business from scratch to $100 million in annual sales. He has been a Professor of Entrepreneurship at York and MacMaster Universities and has worked on the floor of the Toronto Stock Exchange. Today, he’s an author, philosopher and consultant.
