HOW DID ARBOR DAY BECOME A NATIONAL DAY!

The history of National Arbor Day dates back to the 19th century in the United States. It was founded by J. Sterling Morton, a nature lover and journalist, who moved to Nebraska in 1854. Morton noticed the scarcity of trees in the prairie state and realized the importance of trees for windbreaks, shade, fuel, and building materials.

In 1872, Morton proposed a tree-planting holiday to the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture, and it was approved. The first Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10, 1872, where over a million trees were planted across the state. The day saw great enthusiasm and participation from schools, organizations, and individuals. The idea of Arbor Day gained popularity and quickly spread to other states. By 1882, Arbor Day was officially recognized as a legal holiday in Nebraska. The movement continued to grow, and in 1970, President Richard Nixon declared the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day. Today, Arbor Day is celebrated nationwide in the United States, as well as in many other countries, promoting tree planting and environmental awareness.

This year, New Mexico celebrated Arbor Day on March 8, 2024. It’s the second Friday in March.

PLANT A TREE IN OBSERVANCE OF ARBOR DAY!

Arbor Day is an annual observance dedicated to the appreciation and planting of trees. It serves as a reminder of the invaluable role trees play in our lives and the environment. Trees are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they also provide numerous benefits. They help combat climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, release oxygen into the atmosphere, prevent soil erosion, and provide shade and cooling effects. In addition, trees support biodiversity by providing habitat for various species of animals and insects. Recognizing the importance of trees, Arbor Day encourages individuals and communities to actively participate in tree planting initiatives, ensuring a greener and healthier future for generations to come.

FERTILIZERS!
Customers come in looking for fertilizer based on what they were told by someone else.

Most do not understand what the numbers on fertilizers mean. We can clear some of that up. Fertilizers show 3 numbers on their labels indicating N-P-K. The first number is for Nitrogen (N), the second is for Phosphorus (P) and the third is for Potassium (K). Many fertilizers containing high nitrogen are used for greening up the plant, such as a lawn. The high phosphorus number is used for blooms. A very popular water-soluable is BR-61. Potassium is for the uptake of water and resisting drought in fruits and vegetables.

Many of these fertilizers contain other ingredients like Boron, Manganese and Copper. These are added to enhance the product. Please know exactly what you are using the product for or buy an all-purpose product that will work in several occasions. Remember we have no control over Mother Nature and what happens around us.

ZODIAC SIGNS AND GARDENING? HERE’S THIS CYCLES PROFILE.

by The Old Farmer’s Almanac

Here’s THIS MONTHS ZODIAC SIGN PROFILE AND HOW IT CAN HELP YOU GARDEN:

TAURUS (April 21 to May 20)
Taurus settles, or deepens, the spring. Practical and value-oriented, you like consistency and stability. Your garden preferences are also deeply rooted: Carrots, beets, potatoes, and turnips appeal to you and flourish under your care. With your heightened sense of taste and touch, you prefer comfort foods to faddish fare. All forms of potatoes (chips, fries, baked, or mashed) might be found as staples of the evening meal. You love to feel the earth under your feet and will kick off your shoes whenever possible. Taurus likes the tried-and-true, so heirloom varieties of plants that bloom in any color grace your gardens.
